HOW TO HARDWIRE YOUR RADAR DETECTOR TO THE AUTODIMMING MIRROR

MOD DESCRIPTION

This will help you hardwire your radar detector into your autodimming mirror. (if you have one) But it will also show you how to gain access into the sunroof switch area, in order to grab power from there if you need it. I bought Home DepotΒ’s industrial strength Velcro and used it to secure my Bell985 radar detector onto my mirror. Instead of using the stupid mounting bracket, which makes the detector sit low & people/cops can see it & possibly steal it, I now have it velcroed to the top of my mirror. It looks good, is out of sight, and doesnΒ’t rattle at all. (like it did with the windshield mount) It doesnΒ’t obstruct my view either.

DIFFICULTY LEVEL

Grandma could do this one. Should take about 1-hour, with careful handling.

TOOLS NEEDED

    Phillips screwdriver
    Needlenose pliers
    Wire cutters, or scissors
    Electrical tape (maybe)
    Wire taps (from Radioshack)
Multimeter (to determine polarity of wires) not absolute necessity if you are willing to experiment/cut wires
TOTAL COST

Wire taps - a couple of bucks
Velcro (optional to mount detector to mirror) - less than

INSTRUCTIONS

BEFORE YOU START: Make sure the ignition is in the OFF position (your mirror is off)

FYI, on my Bell985, the wire with the WHITE line is the positive source + , and the ALL-BLACK wire is the negative - source. You can use the multimeter to verify the polarity on your unit. (LOL, no comment!)

1) Open your sunglass holder & unscrew the two phillips screws. You should now be able to carefully Β“yankΒ” the overhead console off.

2) Unplug the two harnesses & place the console in the back seat to protect it (paranoia).

3) You will notice the twin wires leading to the autodim mirror. Slice the tape off of them to give you some working room. There is no way to tell which one is + and which is -. So you have to sort of slice into one of the wires with scissors, or knife (donΒ’t cut all the way through)

4) Then take your multimeter (20 Volt scale setting) & place the RED terminal on the cut you just made, making sure you contact terminal to naked wire. The BLACK terminal of your multimeter should be touching the screw on the sunroof motor mount. Turn the ignition to ON. You will get either a 12V indication on your meter, or 0V. If you get 12V, then mark the OTHER wire as negative using black electrical tape. Now you know which wire is Β– and which is +. If you get 0V then mark THIS wire as your Β– source. TURN OFF YOUR IGNITION.

5) Cut the one end of your detectorΒ’s cable to length, and use the multimeter to determine which wire is + and which is -.

6) Plug the one end of the wire into the detector & slide the cut-end through the same opening that the mirrorΒ’s wires go through & up into the overhead console area.

7) Now tap into the + wire of the mirror with the + wire of the detector. Make sure to press real hard with the wire tap to get a good contact. Use the pliers for this. Patience, almost done.

8) Tap your detectorΒ’s Β– wire to the sunroof housing screw. You can use an inline fuse if you want. I didnΒ’t want one, cause my detector runs at 0.1amps.

9) I used a clean rag (not a dirty-smelly one) and wrapped it around the wiretaps & wires in order to isolate any vibrations.

10) Carefully pop the overhead console back on (pain) & screw in the two screws. (of course plug the harnesses back in first)

11) Enjoy your new detector mod. Now your detector should automatically turn on when you have the ignition key turned to ON. And it will turn OFF when you remove your key. (depends on model)

This should be the LAST PIC... How the heck did it get up here?

Remember to snap the plastic cover over the wiretap after tapping into wire

Out of view...
Can you see the detector?
